During the Spanish Civil War, a circus clown is recruited to the Republican cause and forced to massacre dozens of Nationalist troops with only a machete. Decades later, his traumatised son Javier (Carlos Areces) becomes a clown himself, albeit a sad clown fuelled by the tragedy he has seen.
