As one of the largest man made lakes in Alabama, Lake Martin was formed by the construction of Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa River, which was initiated in 1923 and completed in 1926. At the time of its construction, Lake Martin was the largest man made lake in the world. The dam was originally named Cherokee
